Opportunity Framing: Discovering the Right Idea Using Design Thinking + Generative AI

Before you build, pitch, or launch it, ensure it’s the right idea. This 90-minute workshop teaches a repeatable process for identifying meaningful opportunities using Design Thinking—supercharged with Generative AI.

Led by Kevin Popović—creator of the Problems > Problem Statements™ model and Education Manager at UC San Diego’s Design Lab—this session blends practical tools with real-time AI exercises to help students and professionals frame the right problem before jumping to solutions.

You’ll learn to define clear, actionable problem statements, explore creative solutions, and evaluate which ideas are truly worth pursuing—with the support of AI-powered insights that streamline research, refinement, and ideation.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll:

  • Learn the “How Might We” model to define problems with empathy and clarity.

  • Complete the Problems > Problem Statements + Gen AI exercise to turn vague ideas into user-centered challenges.

  • Use ChatGPT to accelerate secondary research, refine problem statements, and generate early prototypes.

  • Practice Divergent Thinking through rapid ideation—including the “Bad Drawings” challenge.

  • Apply evaluation criteria like feasibility, viability, and impact to prioritize ideas.

  • Prototype and pitch your idea using a simple framework and peer feedback.

“Most people are solving the wrong problem. Design Thinking + Generative AI helps you find the right one.” — Kevin Popović
