This article is an excerpt from my forthcoming book, AMPLIFIED! How to Identify the Right Problem and Create the Right Solution with Human Insights x Generative AI— the first half of a two-part series exploring how Human Insights and Artificial Intelligence (HI x AI) can work together to transform creativity and problem solving. In this section, “Why Human Insights Matter More Than Human Intelligence,” I explore why empathy, context, and lived experience remain our greatest competitive advantages in an age increasingly defined by automation.

When people first see HI x AI = AMPLIFIED!, most assume that “HI” means Human Intelligence. It makes sense. Artificial Intelligence is defined by the I in its name, so Human Intelligence feels like the natural counterpart.

But in my work, and in my forthcoming book AMPLIFIED!, HI means something different. It stands for Human Insights, and that small distinction changes everything.

Intelligence versus Insight

Human Intelligence is our ability to think, analyze, and process information. It is measurable, logical, and efficient. Intelligence helps us recall facts, connect data points, and reason through complex situations. In organizations, it shows up as analysis, strategy, and planning. It is how we process information and make decisions.

Human Insights are something deeper. Insights come from empathy, reflection, and interpretation. They are the product of observing behavior, listening without judgment, and understanding meaning. They are not measurable, but they are powerful. Insights explain why people do what they do, how they feel about their experiences, and what motivates them to act.

In short, intelligence tells us how things work. Insight tells us why they matter.

The Relationship Between HI and AI

Artificial Intelligence excels at processing. It can analyze massive amounts of data, identify patterns, and generate responses faster than any human could. What AI cannot do is decide what is meaningful. It does not understand context, emotion, or consequence.

That is where Human Insights come in. HI gives AI purpose. Insights provide direction, focus, and relevance. When AI amplifies human intelligence, it increases speed. When AI is guided by human insight, it increases value.

The goal is not to choose between intelligence and insight but to combine them. AI helps us think faster. HI helps us think deeper. When the two work together, they create what I call Amplified Thinking.

The Evolution of Design Thinking

In the design community, this evolution is already underway. For years, designers have practiced what Don Norman, one of the pioneers of the field, called Human-Centered Design. The goal was to design around the needs and experiences of the user. That approach changed the way we build everything from products to systems.

In his most recent work, Norman has introduced a broader concept: Humanity-Centered Design. Instead of focusing only on individual users, Humanity-Centered Design looks at the long-term impact of design on society, the environment, and the generations that follow. As Norman explains, it is not enough to design something that works for one person today. We must consider how it affects all people tomorrow.

That perspective mirrors the intent behind Human Insights. Insights push us to see the whole system, not just the transaction in front of us. They encourage empathy at scale. When we apply Human Insights through Design Thinking, we move from solving a user’s problem to addressing a human problem.

Applying HI x AI in Practice

In business, most teams rely heavily on intelligence. They measure, analyze, and optimize. Data drives strategy. Dashboards define success. These are important tools, but they can also create a blind spot. When every decision is based on what can be counted, we risk ignoring what counts most: the people behind the numbers.

Insights remind us to ask different questions. Why are people doing what they are doing? What are they trying to accomplish? What frustrates or motivates them? Those are questions that AI cannot answer on its own, but that humans can explore, interpret, and then feed back into the system.

When we pair HI and AI, we can use data to identify patterns and insights to interpret them. AI can reveal what is happening. HI can explain why. Together, they allow organizations to move beyond efficiency toward empathy, creating solutions that are both intelligent and meaningful.

Making It Human

To make it human is to ensure that every technological advancement serves human meaning, not just human efficiency. Innovation without insight becomes automation. Progress without purpose becomes noise.

Human Insights give AI a conscience. They help us design systems, products, and experiences that respect people and the world they live in. They remind us that technology is a tool, not a destination.

This is the essence of AMPLIFIED! It is a framework for multiplying Human Insights with Generative AI to identify the right problems and create the right solutions. It teaches leaders, designers, and innovators to pair the analytical power of machines with the empathetic understanding of people.

The Question That Follows

AI is already transforming how we work, learn, and create. The question is not whether it will continue to grow in capability, but whether we will grow in understanding.

Artificial Intelligence can help us think faster, but only Human Insights can help us think better. Intelligence gives us the capacity to act. Insight gives us the wisdom to act with purpose.

AI amplifies intelligence, but only HI — Human Insights — make it human.
